Hi, everybody! Julian here.

First of all, thank you so much for the warm welcome. It means a lot to me that so many of you have followed, liked and commented on the Hideout social channels. Some of you are even cooking my recipes and care enough to share feedback, kind words, and photos of the results.

After over a year of preparation, I was honestly a little worried that nobody would care about the launch of yet another food blog. I’m so grateful that you have proven me wrong, so please keep it coming!

New content incoming

That being said, I want to grow my presence on social media faster than I have so far. All channels are linked in the header, please give them a follow!

I’ve only ever shared pictures of recipes, and I would like to increase both the frequency and variety of posts. It won’t all be perfectly Cyberpunk-styled, and occasionally include some more authentic posts of my real cooking life. You might find it interesting to see how I’m making certain things work here in middle-of-nowhere Europe, such as the wok setup on my balcony.

Besides the social channels, look out for two more things: First, I will soon begin livestreaming cooking(-related) content! Follow me on Twitch so you don’t miss the launch of my streams. Second, I have a few topics for dedicated blog posts in mind, such as my various trips to countries around the world and the culinary learnings I took home.

Decisions, decisions

Preparing high-quality content to post every week takes time, which is why I’ve decided to put a pause on weekly new recipes here on the blog. Doing both just isn’t possible because I also work a pretty intense day job at my indie game studio.

Cooking, shooting, editing, writing, and posting a recipe (which takes about a full work day of its own) is just the tip of the iceberg. There’s a lot of research and preparation involved before a recipe even qualifies for the Hideout — and to be frank, right now I’m slowly running out of my most well-practiced recipes. I would like to learn and research a good amount of them in more depth before launching the next “season” of weekly posts. I’ll do a lot of that on stream, so we can learn together!

In the meantime

I also chose this point in time because the Hideout just hit a nice round number: With the addition of Okonomiyaki (pictured here with my pug Joe), it now contains 30 recipes. For the time being, that’s a lot for you to try out. Please feel free to explore the different collections, and use the search function at the top of the page.

Season 2 when?

Over the next few months, I’m going to focus hard on getting the word out. After that, I will spend much of the summer in Tokyo, far away from my kitchen and photo set. However, I will certainly return with a treasure trove of knowledge and new recipes to pass on to you, and maybe I’ll manage to do a few livestreams from Japan.

This is not to say I will definitely post no recipes at all in that period — whenever I deem one ready for the Hideout, I won’t keep it from you. And if you ever have a recipe request, please don’t hesitate to hit me up. If it’s a cuisine I’m somewhat familiar with, I’ll look into adding it to the Hideout!

Lastly, I want to emphasize that I have zero intention of dropping the Cyberpunk gimmick in the actual recipe posts and pictures. It’s just that the aesthetic is limited to my photo set, and I’d really like to share more of my real-life cooking journey with you, which isn’t quite as stylish all the time. (Such as the selfie below from a Bangkok cooking class last November.)

Thank you for reading. See you very soon! — Julian

    Hi

is there a plain (i.e. without food) version of the cool background you’re using? I’d like to use it in MS Teams to give boring conference calls a certain cyberpunk twist.

Can even contain “hideoutrecipes” logo using your cool font to advertise the blog to foodie-coworkers.

    Thx!

    • Hi! Sorry it took me a while to reply. I didn’t have any, but I just took and edited some photos for you (including the watermark). My photos are usually all vertical, but I included a horizontal one as well assuming your slides will be 16 by 9. The pictures are all quite large anyway, so you should be able to crop them as needed. Let me know how that went, haha.
